As an instructor at ESDIC, I am committed to offering you the best lessons and advice I possibly can, in order to help you pass this difficult national examination.
Often, students ask me, “What is the most important point to pass the 2nd examination?
Is it grammar? Or is it pronunciation?”
In answering, I’d like to share with you some points that I feel are important to pass the 2nd examination.

→ESDICの講師として、この難しい国家試験合格の手助けをするため、出来うる限り最高のレッスンとアドバイスを提供することをお約束いたします。
学生は私によくこう聞きます。「２次試験合格に最も重要なのは何でしょうか。文法ですか、それとも発音ですか」
その質問には、２次試験合格に大事だと私が感じるいくつかの要点を皆様にお話することでお答えします。
 
1. Your overall impression counts:
Successful students always have a wonderful combination of required skills, knowledge and attributes to pass the exami-nation.
They have the ability to show the examiners that they are “naturally born” tour guides.
While grammar and pronunciation are important points, it is also necessary for you to give informative, accurate, and easy-to-understand answers in a cheerful and pleasant manner.
During the examination, in addition to giving excellent answers, you need to prove that you will be a friendly and profes-   sional tour guide.

→１.全体的な印象が大切
２次試験に合格する人は常に、合格するのに必要な技能、知識、特性の組み合わせが絶妙です。
そういう人は、自分が「天性の」通訳ガイドであることを示す能力があります。
文法や発音は大事な要点ですが、元気よくにこやかに、有益で、正確で、かつ理解しやすい答えを言うこともまた必要なことです。
試験の間、すばらしい答えを言うことに加えて、将来親切でプロのガイドになるであろうということを証明する必要があります。
 
2. Simple words and expressions work best:
When you say your answers, I think it is best to use words and expressions that you are comfortable with and can pro-　　nounce clearly.
Difficult words are meaningless if you can’t remember them or pronounce them correctly, so avoid them.
During the interview, it is much better to use simple, junior-high-school English correctly, than fail by trying to say long 　and unfamiliar words that you struggle to remember and pronounce.

→２.簡単な単語や表現が最も効果的
答える時は、安心していられてはっきりと発音できる単語や表現を使うのが最もよいと思います。
難解な単語は、それを思い出すことができないとか、正確に発音することができないのであれば、無意味ですから、避けたほうがよいです。
試験では、思い出すのに苦労するとか、発音するのに苦労する長ったらしくて馴染みのない単語を使おうとして失敗するくらいだったら、簡単な中学生レベルの英語を正確に使うほうがはるかにましです。
 
3. Content too, not only language
Also, having a wealth of information about Japan is another important point.
I have taught many students who could speak fluent English.
These students thought that they could easily pass the exam just because they spoke English like native speakers, but 　　they were mistaken.
Why? It’s because they didn’t have enough knowledge about Japan.
For example, one time I asked a student to tell me about Nagasaki.
He could tell me only one thing: “It’s a city in Kyushu.”
I then asked him why delicious rice can be grown in Niigata and he said in perfect English, “Oh, that’s because it rains”.
Please remember that fluent language skills are not the only requirements to pass the examination.

→３.ことばだけでなく、内容も
さらに、日本に間する情報を豊富に持っていることももうひとつの重要な点です。
私は流暢に英語を話すことができる学生をたくさん教えてきました。
そうした学生は、自分がネイティブのように英語を話すことができるというそれだけの理由で試験はらくらく合格できると思っていましたが、それは間違いでした。
なぜでしょうか。それは彼らが日本に関する知識を十分に持っていなかったためです。
ひとつの例ですが、あるとき、私はある学生に長崎について聞いたのです。その学生はただ「長崎は九州の都市です」とだけしか答えることができませんでした。
私はそれから「新潟ではなぜおいしい米ができるのか」と聞いたところ、その学生は完璧な英語で「あ、それは雨が降るからです」と言ったのです。
試験合格に必要なことは、ただ流暢な言語能力だけではないんだということをどうそ覚えておいてください。
 
4. Many “don’ts” strengthen your interview:
During the interview, it’s important to know what to say and do but also important to know what NOT to say and do.
For example, don’t speak like a robot; don’t sound like a tape recording; don’t whisper because you are nervous and 　　　scared; don’t look like a statue; don’t stare at the sky; and last but not least, don’t forget to smile.
During the interview, answer in a very friendly and natural way, being sure to speak with confidence in a clear, strong 　　　　voice while making eye-contact with all the interviewers.

→４.多くの「禁止事項」によって面接を揺るぎないものにする
試験では、何を言うべきなのか、あるいはするべきなのかを知ることは重要ですが、しかしさらに何を言ったらいけないのか、あるいは何をすべきでないのかを知ることも重要です。
例えば、ロボットのようにしゃべってはいけません。テープレコーダーのように聞こえるのではいけません。上がっていて怖じけているという理由で小声で話してはいけません。像のように見えるのはいけません。あらぬ方向を見つめてはいけません。
そして最後になりましたが、ほほえみを忘れてはいけません。
試験では、大いに親切にそして自然に答えてください。
そして、すべての試験官と目線を合わせながら、必ずはっきりと力強い声で、自信を持って答えてください。
 
5. Would you like to be “your” tour guide?
Now, I want you to ask yourself the following question: If you were a tourist who came to Japan, would you be satisfied if “you” became “your” tour guide?
I hope that you will seriously think about the answer to this question and respond honestly.
I hope that you can answer with a very firm “yes”.
It’s vital for you to show, during the examination, that you will become a tour guide whom tourists will want to travel with during their trips.

→５.「自分」のガイドになりたいですか。
さて、私は次の質問をしたいのです。もしあなたが日本に来た観光客だとして、あなたは、「あなた」が「あなたの」の観光ガイドになれば満足しますか、と。
この質問に対する答えを真剣に考えて、正直に答えて欲しいのです。
非常にきっぱりと「はい」と答えることができればよいと思います。
試験では、観光客が旅行中に一緒に旅行したいガイドにあなたはなるだろうということを示すことが極めて重要です。
 
Finally, I always work hard to ensure that every class is informative and valuable to every student.
I always feel honored to hear from former students who tell me that I contributed to their success in passing the 2nd  ex-amination.
However, I tell them that their passing wasn’t because of me, but rather, it was because of their own tremendous effort.

→最後に、私はすべてのクラスがすべての学生にとって有益で価値があるように、常に一生懸命頑張っています。
かつての学生から２次試験に合格したのは私のおかげだったというのを聞くと私はいつも晴れがましく思います。
しかし、彼らの合格は私ではなく、彼ら自身が大いに努力したおかげだと私は彼らに言うのです。
